SQE: What You Need to Know Before You Start

Posted by Michelle Goh | February 2026

Can you do SQE1 from a non-law background?

Yes. The SRA stipulates that to be admitted as a solicitor, you need a degree in any subject, or equivalent. A law degree is not a requirement. I come from a non-law background myself and passed both SQE1 and SQE2 on my first attempt, so you can do it too.

What is SQE1?

SQE1 is a multiple choice exam that tests functioning legal knowledge across fourteen subject areas. It is sat in two separate assessments, FLK1 and FLK2, each containing 180 questions. You sit them on separate days.

FLK1 covers business law and practice, dispute resolution, contract, tort, the legal system of England and Wales, constitutional and administrative law and EU law, and legal services.

FLK2 covers property practice, wills and intestacy and the administration of estates and trusts, solicitors accounts, land law, trusts, and criminal law and practice.

You need to pass both. There is no negative marking, so you should always answer every question even if you are uncertain. The full syllabus is available on the SQE1 specification page.

Resources

The most commonly used preparation providers are Barbri, QLTS School, BPP, and the University of Law. Each offers SQE courses and practice materials. The right choice depends on your learning style, budget, and how much structure you need.
